Black Lace and Paper Poppies

I'm glad I re-discovered my little lace bolero thing the other day around a month ago. (Dear self, post mindless drivel on The Internet more frequently.)  I've been in an absolute frenzy of busyness and activity since then, and I've been doing it all whilst wearing my bolero. I've barely taken it off!  Here are two boring outfit post pictures, which accidentally both involve that wonderful garment:

There was a complicated reason why I had to wear orange, and since my plot to get around this was vetoed by Simon on the grounds that The Simpsons isn't an acceptable style muse (Red dress, yellow tights, red shoes - I still think it would have worked), I instead opted for this orange skirt from the Dorothy Perkins sale rail. (I have had great success in Dotty P's sales lately.  The DID have an orange version of my collection of colourblock dresses, and I would have snapped it up had it not been a size too small!)

Outfit Two is from a burlesque show on 11/11/11, and as usual, my completely frivolous tribute to Armistice Day was to stick poppies in my hair.  But look!  Look at my amazing rockabilly fringe!  Best one I've ever done!  I went to the Jeepers Peepers reunion show at the Cluny and had a brilliant time pretending to be cooler and rockabillier than I am.  Maybe in my next quarter-century I'll have tattoos and dubious piercings...

So long, readers.  Maybe I'll update again before this time next month, and MAYBE when I do I'll be wearing something other than my lace bolero!  Over and out.

In Hollywood Minnie travelled far, They changed her name to Minnie LaMarr

Polkadots.  My wardrobe is bursting with them. (See?)  Most of 'em are red and white.

Dressing up.  I heart it.  Particularly when there are alcoholic drinks, cameras and my bestest chums present.

Small wonder, then, that when I hear the siren call of a fancy-dress party I frequently fall back on my favourite costume, the ever-stylish Miss Mouse.

When I was very little I had a treasured Minnie Mouse dress.  It was t-shirty, and the skirt was red and white stripes and the top had a picture of the Mouse herself chalking "I <3 Mickey" onto the wall.  I loved it!

Well, we're not going quite that far back in time with this pictorial Toast Post, but we are going time-travelling.  Here is youthful me as Minnie Mouse way back in 2007, and ginger me as Minnie Mouse in 2009...

I made those ears out of coloured card and a polkadot headband, wore them twice, carried them through four house-moves, and then dug them out once more for last month's 'Kayleigh's moving away, so let's all dress up as cartoon characters and get drunk' party.

Oops.

So Magic Box it was, then, for some generic mouse ears that were too big for my head, and an irritating sponge mouse nose that Simon made me buy even though it kept falling off and it smelt bad.  Oh, and I finally found a use for my silly dungaree skirt. Behold!

Squeak squeak!

The night is bitter, the stars have lost their glitter

Oh mannn, how have I been SO absent from this little haven of narcissism?  I have gone almost a month without talking about, or posting gratuitous photographs of, myself!  Let me rectify that immediately:

During my radio silence, I seem to have gone up to 46 followers.  Jiminy!  Hello, new friends-on-the-Internet!

I have got a post about cartoon mice in the pipeline for you, which will maybe go up this weekend, if I can be mithered.

Here is another photograph, in homage to my new red trousers (My little Oasis problem strikes again)

I went to see 'End of the Rainbow' on Friday night, which was excellent, although not exactly a barrel of laughs.  I was so captivated by Judy's costumes, all sequin twin-sets and huge neck scarves, that when it came to dressing to go out on Saturday night, I couldn't help but try to evoke a little 'late-'60s cabaret' with my outfit.  Turns out I've got woefully few sequinned items in my repertoire, so this was the best I could do.  Not terribly Judy, but I like it anyway.

Of course, I couldn't resist having a go at the Signature Judy Hand, as demonstrated so marvellously by both Tracie Bennett and the lady herself...

She came to a sticky end alright, but WHAT a performer.

Colourblock

One, Two, Three

One

Two

Three

I like my Dorothy Perkins colourful dresses. I like bright tights and plastic jewellery, too.

Best of all I like convincing Kayleigh to buy one two as well and going to parties as creepy awesome twins.

(Should have been red shoes, I know...
There was a complicated tights situation that you just wouldn't understand.)

 Sunday Girl necklaces, naturally.

Miss you already, Ginger McDramaQueen.

Sunday

The ONLY worthwhile thing I've achieved today has been cleaning the messy polish off my nails.  Seriously.

For the past couple of weeks I've been sporting Models Own Juicy Jules, a mega-glittery shade that, let me tell you, goes down a STORM with the under-5s.  I think they think I'm some sort of fairy.  Anyway, it's pretty but a total beeyatch to remove. I'm pretty sure the main ingredient is Superglue.  There are two known ways to take off Juicy Jules; either by compulsively picking at it during moments of boredom or nervousness (one reason I needed it to disappear today - I've got an audition tonight and it wouldn't do to be scraping off the remains of my manicure during!) OR by the very useful method invented by Gem Fatale, which I am demonstrating below.

I think I resemble some sort of creepy alien from Dr Who that might make Kayleigh hide behind a cushion.  Without my make-up on I DO look a bit like a minotaur, it's true.

What you have to do is cut a small piece of cotton wool, dip it in nail varnish remover, attach it to your nail with a strip of kitchen foil (I used Sellotape, because money (or, for that matter, kitchen foil) doesn't grow on trees y'know), sit and wait for ten minutes, then un-tape and simply wipe away any remaining sparkles.  I daresay soaking your fingertips in nail varnish remover isn't very good for your health, but one has to make sacrifices for the sake of glamour, doesn't one?

*Sigh* I thought writing a toast post (about nail varnish remover of all things. How low have I sunk!) might count as achieving something today, but it clearly does not.  Ah well.

I Like Winning. Give Me Prizes.

I am often heard to complain that I haven't got a thing to wear.  This is obviously a lie, as my groaning, overstretched wardrobe with its multiple dresses per hanger will attest.  Nonetheless, I would greatly like to win lots and lots of new clothes from the rather swish online shop Zalando.  Zalando have asked bloggers to enter their competition by choosing items from the shop to style into a fantasy outfit.  Would you like to see my entry?

  1. Selected Femme Snake dress in turquoise: £59.95
To start with, I’ve (surprise, surprise) gone for a dress.  The colour of this one is beautiful – very summery, but I’ve decided to style it for autumn with…

  1. AirStep Oyster boots: £280
…knee-high boots.  I know, they’re a bit clunky for such a pretty, delicate dress, but I make my clothes work hard, and this dress would have to multi-task as nightwear AND daywear for me.  I love the colour combination of turquoise and chocolate, and I think they’ll work just fine with the dress.

  1.  Liu Jo blazer: £464.95
It’s chilly in Newcastle in the autumn, so I’ll need a jacket.  There’s something Grecian about the shape of the Snake dress, which I think is picked up perfectly in the woven belt of this tan blazer.

  1. Numero 10 Victoria Street handbag: £570
Since this is a daytime outfit, a big handbag is required to carry all of the stuff that a modern-day Grecian maiden needs at the weekend.  Chocolate-brown leather returns in this one – doesn’t it look soft?

  1. Black Lily Luella scarf: £59.95
I wanted some gold accessories to set off the brown and turquoise, but Zalando don’t have a great deal of jewellery on the site.  The gold print on this pretty scarf is actually birds, but when rolled up like this, it gives a vague impression of the strings of gold chains that our Greek Goddess would wear!

  1. s.Oliver belt: £23.95
This dress doesn’t really need a belt, but I couldn’t resist the metallic feather.  I’d probably contrive to wear it in my hair or something!

  1. Uslu Airlines nail polish in DRS: £16:95
It was the pretty turquoise colour that drew me to this dress in the first place, so I didn’t want it to get lost amongst all the brown.  I’d pick it up again on my fingernails with this nail polish.

So!  How do you like my Zalando ensemble?  If you would like to enter yourself, just pop over to the Zalando competition page and choose your clothes, then let them know when you've blogged about your creation.  Good luck!  (But please don't make a better outfit than me, because I want to win.  Ta!)

Boring Outfit Post. Yawn.

Morning, campers! (Two minutes to twelve as I type this, technically still morning!)  Stresstastic week, bookended by bouts of impressive drunkenness.  Good start to September!

Your Position as a Topman is a Highly Exalted One

Thanks to a dear friend who can't be trusted to buy clothes by himself, on Sunday I found myself, for the first time, in Topman.  I detest Topshop for having ideas above its station, but didn't think the man version would be quite as up itself.

We didn't look around that much, but while Matt was in the changing room I did happen to spot something that I absolutely NEED in my life:

Awesome!  It reminds me of my fave Cath Kidston print (Which, annoyingly, you can't buy in a handbag format, because it's supposedly for little boys)

As much as Matt claims to trust my clothes-buying advice, I don't think he would be impressed if I insisted he buy this cowboy shirt and wear it at every social occasion, so I'm going to have to have it for myself.  I'm going to bookmark its place on the Topman website and stalk stalk stalk until it comes into the sale, and when it does I'm going to purchase it and I'm going to wear it knotted at the waist, with a denim skirt and my Cacophony Hicksville cowboy boots.

AND, whilst dressed in such a way, I'm going to hide in this tent with some spam, ginger beer and gobstoppers, and shoot Indians with a pop-gun.

Fishies

This picture makes me terribly happy.

"Life is one continual round of solicitations. It's like living in a masque at the opera!"

So, the accidental maternity one for Chinese with the tapdancers on Wednesday, the green one to take afternoon tea with Alice and watch narcissistic dvds with Kayleigh and the boys on Thursday, the floral one with the huge sleeves for Laura's party on Friday, either the tarty red and black one or the red lacy one for Sebastion's party on Saturday, and the purple one for breakfast with Ruth and co on Sunday...?  And soon it will be next week and this dilemma will happen all over again!

My LIFE is SO HARD!

(Also have I mentioned I bloody love my friends?  And my life.)

Oh, Dorothy!

This is a Toast Post about dresses.  (If you prefer to read about my actual life, scroll down a few posts!)  In fact, this is a post about Dorothy Perkins dresses, but in classic Bette style, I'm going to witter on about myself for a bit first, so sit tight and wait a few minutes!

This is not a dress.  This is a skirt that I bought in my favourite charity shop in Uppingham.  Despite Uppingham being populated only by elderly people and boarding school junior yuppies, I always find something nice to buy in their Age Concern!  Most recently it was a sparkly red and black dress - in the words of my mum; "tarty", and in the words of my Granny; "Well. We'll certainly see you coming in that."
Anyway, the skirt has a broken zip, so I pin it at my waist, which is good because I can make it sit higher and fit in a more flattering way.  I'm wearing it with a random white top, a mini cardi-thing I bought in America after I did my A-Levels, socks and my super cool Fred Astaire shoes, which were also from Dorothy Perkins, now I think of it.  I was going for a '50s bobby-soxer sort of look, and I wanted a little scarf round my neck with it, but I didn't have one the right colours, but I did find a very '50s-ish pink beads necklace which did the trick instead.

And then I made a cake for Alice, in my funky vintage apron.

I think it's high time that my job starts again - I clearly have too much time on my hands at present!

Anyhoo, that was on Monday, and on Tuesday I cycled into town on a birthday-present-hunt, and I accidentally bought three dresses in Dorothy Perkins.
(I say "bought" - in fact, thanks to a gift card end-of-term present from the loveliest children in the world, who like to fuel Miss Hamer's dresses addiction, plus an attractive buy-one-get-one-free offer on the sale dregs, I actually only had to cough up a very small number of pounds.)

I in fact only went into Dotty P's in the first place to look for yellow tights, which I desire for an upcoming Batman characters fancy dress party.

That's Bette Kane, aka Flamebird, and although I have never watched/read/whatevered any Batman thing in my life, she's my favourite because her name's Bette Flamebird (although I'm informed she's not actually called Bette Flamebird!  Just Flamebird on its own!) and when I'm a famous burlesque dancer my stage name is going to be Bette Flame.  (I chose it years ago, and if any other burlesque wannabes nick it in the meantime, I shall be forced to strangle them with their own G-strings. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!)

Sooner or later I might actually get round to talking about the actual purpose of this post, the lovely Dorothy Perkins A/W11 Fit and Flare colour block dresses!

I didn't even make it to the tights section, as I was immediately distracted by the colourful collection of these cute, simple, '60s-inspired dresses, which Dotty P herself had styled with bright tights and shoes, creating an irresistable display of fun autumnal cosiness.  I instantly forgot about Flamebird and her yellow tights and made a beeline for the display, with the memory of my gift card dancing before my eyes.  On closer inspection I found that the dresses may look like various colourways of the same thing, but they're actually all slightly different - some have zips, some are two-tone, they have slightly different seams, different sleeves, varying fullness of skirt...  I was besotted.  They're varying prices too, but the ones that took my fancy the most were £22, which I thought was very reasonable for Dorothy Perkins these days, where you can now expect to pay upwards of thirty-five quid for a dress.  (Well, one can expect to pay that much.  I have no intention of spending £35 on one frock.  £22, paid-for-by-generous-gift-card, on the other hand, I can get on board with!)  I took a couple into the changing room to try on, and quickly decided on a jade green one with elbow-length sleeves.  At the risk of looking Christmassy, I might have to avoid red accessories with it, but I'm excited to attack it with garishly-coloured jewellery.  The sleeves are the perfect length for showing off bracelets, as is the scoop neck for necklaces, and I think the heavy fabric and retro shape of the bodice will look nice and vintagey with brooches.  It's such a pretty colour that it looks just fine by itself, though.  With bright tights.  And shoes.  And possibly a beret.

I couldn't find any pictures online of the collection to show you, so I decided instead to play around on Polyvore (I echo my earlier 'Time I went back to work' sentiment!) and make some outfits.  Obviously I got carried away with the bright colours.  So, if you want to gaze upon a subtly complementary palette of neatly-accessorised autumnal dresses, head to your nearest Dorothy Perkins and check out the window display.  If you want to see my crayon-box efforts, read on!

Fit and Flare #2Fit and Flare #3
Hmm, why so much white space?  More Polyvore practice needed, methinks!
Anyway, pretty dresses.  Here's a sneaky peek at how I intend to wear mine:

Oh!  And if anyone was wondering what became of the other two dresses I acquired that day, well, one was a red lacy skater dress type thing (which may come in for my Bette Flamebird costume, now I come to think of it) that was vastly reduced in the end of the sale, and then I needed something else to get for free but I didn't like ANYTHING else on the BOGOF rail.  I picked up some boring top, but then I saw some little frilly dresses in pretty colours so I grabbed one of those without trying it on, or in fact looking very closely at it.  Of course it wasn't until the lady was ringing it up that I noticed it was in fact a maternity dress!  I thought "Ah well, it was free anyway, I'll sell it on ebay and make a profit), but once I had tried it on out of morbid curiosity, I found that it actually looked pretty nice.  It's got a sort of adjustable waist tie which gathers up the front of the dress, depending on how great with child you are, and for someone either at the beginning of her pregnancy (or WITHOUT a bun in the oven, thankyouverymuch), the result is actually very flattering.  And you can't tell it's a maternity dress at all!  (Except, you know what will happen - every time I get a compliment on it, I won't be able to resist telling the 'I accidentally bought a maternity dress' story...)  Brilliant!  I might always wear maternity dresses now!

Three cheers, Dorothy Perkins!
